Dena's Podcast for the substitute teacher

This is the second of three podcasts for the subsitute teacher for a day that I know I am going to be out of the library. The first podcast would discuss how the substitute could get comfortable with the library, access the class wiki, locate my lesson plans, locate the schedule for the day, and contact others in the school for help.  This podcast is relative to an assignment where students would be using a Storify that I created about severe weather.  Students would be required to post their assignments to the class wiki by ten o'clock in the evening so that I could review their work and offer up any feedback before the next day of school.  Although I will be out of school, I will be available via email for the substitute teacher and the students (ena.caron@simmons.edu">dena.caron@simmons.edu). Music in the podcase is "Chasing Tornados" by Chasing Tornados, and is available via IODA Promonet.   The third podcast would be about what the substitute teacher would need to do before leaving for the day.

This podcast is all about primary sources. Since there will be a research project where primary sources are required, this is an overview on what they are and why one would use them. This is aimed at 8-12 grade students who are required to do a research paper using primary sources. Therefore, this is directed at the students who may be struggling with this concept.

Maya Bery - The Stages of Culture Shock
X
July 10, 2011 05:01 PM PDT

This podcast offers an overview of the stages of culture shock and offers some practical tips on how to deal with it.  Maya's insights have been gained from multiple stints overseas, and it is her hope that this podcast leaves someone else more aware and equipped to deal with culture shock than she was the two times she moved to India.

For a good, general overview of culture shock, check out the Wikipedia entry. This entry from Kid's Health also gives a good deal of information and is a helpful resource. If you are interested in reading about the author's time abroad in Taiwan, you can check out her blog, Adventures in Taiwan.

Chani's Storytelling Seminar

This podcast is the fictional second podcast for students in a "Storytelling Seminar" which is a collaborative project between my school's English, history, science, and library.

The idea, building off of the Scoop.it page I created about Amelia Earhart, is that teaching stories, and writing through stories, will help students create better products within the curriculum and content areas. I am aiming this at the upper middle school and lower high school levels (though I suppose it would have been easier to just say grades 6-9).

I also meant to include in this podcast the introduction to the options of creating stories on Storify.com, Xtranormal, Animoto, Voicethread, Wikispaces (collaboratively), ToonDoo, Wayfaring (mapping tool), Audacity, good LORD I could go on! And now that I think about it I wish I had done a different podcast talking about all of these tools and how students could use them to tell the story of Amelia!

Well, that is what I love about teaching; getting the opportunity to improve upon what you do each and every time you do it!

On this episode of Tech Tools for Teachers I discuss the possibilities for using Polleverywhere.com in the classroom. From dipsticking students on last night's reading, to backchanneling during lessons, this free technology tool for educators has plenty of potential.

To find out more about the Learning Commons at Concord Carlisle High School discussed in the podcast, visit library teacher Robin Cicchetti's CCHS blog and to view Robin's slides from that MSLA conference session I mentioned, click here.

Feel free to contact me with any questions about Polleverywhere or anything else "Tech Tools for Teachers" related at Laura@AnytownHighSchoolLibrary.com and check out my school library website at AnytownHighSchoolLibrary.com.

The Flaherty Library is open every day Monday - Friday from 7:15am to 4pm.  You can always email me and I'll be happy to help with your questions: karnold@sacredheartkingston.com

This podcast explains the two new technological projects that were completed over the summer in the Flaherty Library.  The two new projects are the introduction of WiFi and a digital projector with laptop and large screen tv.  I also remind students that we have several spaces available for Virtual High School and to sign up with Miss Arnold as soon as possible.   If students are interested in Livebinders, Glogsters or Powerpoint please click on the links provided or speak with Miss Arnold in the library for a demonstration.  All three of these technologies are just different ways to create multi-media presentations that go along with your typed reports.   Lastly, I always encourage students to visit the library often for help or as place to relax and study.

Barbara's podcast reading Cakes and Miracles
Clean X

Listen to this podcast and you can hear author Barbara Diamond Goldin reading her latest picture book Cakes and Miracles. It's illustrated by Jaime Zollars. Barbara's really happy that the book just won the Sydney Taylor Honor Award! If you'd like to read an interview with Barbara about the book, it's on Mary Ann Scheur's blog.

Barbara hopes that kids in schools and libraries will be able to listen to her reading her book via this podcast, since she can't visit every school and library in person, even though she'd like to.

Cakes and Miracles takes place in Eastern Europe a long time ago, in the late 1800's and early 1900's, in a small town, called a shtetl in Yiddish. Yiddish was the language the Jews of Eastern Europe spoke then. Three of Barbara's grandparents came from Eastern Europe, which is how she became interested in the life of the shtetl. The main character in the book, Hershel, is very excited about the upcoming holiday of Purim. Purim has always been one of Barbara's favorite holidays. You get dressed up in costumes, make a lot of noise with a bunch of your friends, and eat yummy cakes called hamantashen! The story of Purim is the story of Queen Esther, and how she and her cousin Mordicai helped to save the Jews of Persia from the King's minister Haman.
